Tony Pulis expected to be named as Middlesbrough manager by new year

• Garry Monk sacked on Saturday with side 12 points off automatic promotion

Middlesbrough hope to name Tony Pulis as their new manager by the end of the week and, ideally, as early as Boxing Day, when Bolton Wanderers visit the Riverside.

The former West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City manager is in discussions with Steve Gibson, Boro’s owner, with a view to agreeing a three-year contract to succeed Garry Monk, who was sacked late on Saturday night following the team’s 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday.
