Hillsborough slur about fans burning police horse false, says CPS
Prosecutors find insufficient evidence for criminal case against officer over claims that horse was burned with cigarettes
A notorious slur against Liverpool supporters after the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, alleging that some people trapped in the crush outside the Leppings Lane turnstiles had seriously burned a police horse, has been found by the Crown Prosecution Service to have been false.
The CPS concluded that there was some evidence to suggest that a former mounted South Yorkshire police constable, David Scott, gave an untrue account when he claimed that his horse appeared singed afterwards. However the CPS decided there was not enough evidence to prove to a criminal standard that Scott’s statements were fabricated.
