FAI funding suspended by Sport Ireland amid concerns over Delaney loan

• Former chief executive John Delaney loaned FAI €100,000
• Sport Ireland provides €2.7 a year for FAI programmes

Sport Ireland has confirmed it has suspended funding to the Football Association of Ireland amid concerns over a controversial loan.

Last week, Sport Ireland’s chief executive, John Treacy, told an Oireachtas committee his organisation had no knowledge of a “bridging loan” made to the FAI by former chief executive John Delaney of €100,000 (£87,000) or that the FAI was paying Delaney’s rent.
