Brighton had taken a two goal lead with successive second-half corners and the crowd at the Olympic Stadium were growing restless when West Ham’s Austrian number seven stepped up to convert two opportunities laid on by substitutes brought on in desperation by Manuel Pellegrini. By that point the Chilean had already dragged Andy Carroll off at half-time, a move that summed up the home side’s failure to make an impact on the match.
